New research reveals the profound impact of play on family bonding, language development, and emotional connection

In living rooms across the country, families gather as children return from school and parents wind down from work. Yet despite sharing the same physical space, sometimes we can be engaged in different activities. Now, groundbreaking research from Kinder and the University of East London’s Institute for the Science of Early Years reveals how something as simple as shared play can weave these fragmented family moments back into unified, connected experiences.

Beyond the laboratory: Real families, real homes

This pioneering research ventured into the authentic environment where family life unfolds—the home. Twenty families from Newham, London, with children aged 3 to 6, participated in this preliminary pilot study that used cutting-edge wearable technology to capture the subtle dynamics of family interaction.

 Pretty much everything we know about play has come from bringing children into a controlled, artificial laboratory type environment. There’s very little research that looks at how play naturally occurs in people’s homes when they’re going about their everyday life.

The emotional power of play

The research uncovered compelling evidence that play acts as a gravitational force within families. Before any toys were introduced, families appeared scattered across their living spaces, moving in fragmented patterns with limited physical closeness. Children might occupy different corners of the room while parents moved through separate activities.

However, once play objects entered the environment, a remarkable transformation occurred. AI-based analysis of movement patterns showed family members beginning to gather more closely, their positions becoming increasingly coordinated as they clustered around shared areas. This physical convergence suggests that play doesn’t just occupy time – it actively draws families into shared space, encouraging co-presence and proximity that forms the foundation for deeper connection.

Creating a shared language space

Perhaps even more striking were the findings around communication and language development. Using large language models to analyse the content of family conversations, researchers discovered that play creates what they term a “shared language space ” – moments when families move beyond talking past each other to genuinely engaging with the same ideas.

During play sessions, conversations showed significantly higher semantic alignment, with family members more often discussing the same topics, responding to each other’s ideas, and building shared meaning together. Even during solo imaginative play, children frequently narrated their actions aloud, creating rich storytelling that contributed to language development.

The emotional dimension

The most remarkable findings emerged from heart rate data, which revealed how play can synchronise families at a physiological level. During play periods, caregivers and children showed greater heart rate alignment—moments when their bodies responded in sync, whether through shared excitement, focused engagement, or collective calm.

With the rich garnered from this study, we’re able to see that that during these moments of connection in play, micro changes in heartbeats and stress patterns start to become more co-ordinated. This physiological synchrony contrasts sharply with non-play moments, where heart rate patterns remained more independent, reflecting less shared emotional engagement.

Breaking down family disconnect

These findings illuminate play’s role as a powerful antidote to modern family fragmentation. In an era where busy schedules can leave family members physically present but emotionally distant, play emerges as a bridge back to genuine connection.

One of the things we think might be really important about play is that it can help overcome some of the inevitable daily disconnections in families. Creating these moments where we’re thinking about the same thing at the same time, we’re engaging, we’re responding to one another, we’re synchronous in our movement patterns, in our emotions.

The broader implications

This research seeks to share the value that unstructured play time can have in people’s daily routines. These findings suggest that the simple act of playing together – whether with toys, games, or imaginative activities – represents far more than entertainment. It’s an investment in family bonds, children’s language development, and collective emotional wellbeing.

The research forms part of Kinder’s new global Value of Play initiative, which represents Kinder’s commitment to collaborating with leading academic and clinical experts to explore the real-life impact of play on childhood development and family dynamics. Through this initiative, Kinder aims to foster a culture where play is valued and prioritised.

Over the past year, I’ve been working alongside three internationally recognised experts on independent research exploring how spontaneous, joyful play supports children’s development – particularly their emotional growth, social skills, and imagination.
